I remember /r/starcraft running into a size limit problem with the .css file when they tried each individual account have a different flair. I might be mistaken, but just a heads up.

I think that was before the new flair was introduced.

This is correct. The current flair implementation is actually built into the platform; it's no longer necessary to use a CSS hack.

pin something in the sidebar with the answer to the question "hi guys, just got steam, what games should I buy with an $11 budget?"

yeah we need this. i'm sick of seeing these. and we should have a link to steam support so we don't have to see "problem opening steam" or "problem opening [steam game]"

Maybe a thing on the sidebar that lists the Deal of the Day and whatever midweek or weekend sale is happening at the time? I stay logged out of Steam unless I'm actually using it while I'm at college because my internet is bad, so that could be a nice quick way for me to check each day.

I think improving this into discussion about the games on sale? Or some daily/weekly post where there's list of the games on sale and discussion about is it any good and what kind of game we have here?

I personally love for example the hero posts in /r/dota2. It pretty much gives people an option to join ongoing discussion in daily/weekly manner. Or something like game of the day on steam discussion.

That's a good idea! It's really easy to find out what games are on sale on Steam, but less easy to find out if they're any good. And I trust Reddit's taste in games most of the time.

Removal of image posts. We get it, Steam had a pricing mistake.

This subreddit has no reason to allow image posts. If you need to post a picture, it can be done with an introduction and conclusion without linking directly to it. Emphasize the discussion.

Have a /r/steamhelp for people asking questions, and people go there to help.

Also servers. There should be servers.

Remove posts which are blatant circlejerks. Yes we all know steam is good, no we don't need to be told against why EA sucks.

Perhaps some link flairs people can use to quickly identify to others what their post is. E.g. "Question", "Deal", "Announcement" (steam downtimes). It's only a minor thing, but would make it a lot easier to distinguish content at a glance. The current user flair icons are a bit...botched together right now too, I'll add a to-do note to myself to try make some cleaner ones for you all at the weekend. ;3

Do you mods or /r/steam in general hang out in any IRC channels anywhere? I'd like to stalk you.

We have tossed the idea around about having an irc for for /r/steam. Is that something you all would want?

[–]counterplex 2 points3 points ago

I think having an irc channel might cannibalize the sub-reddit community.

If I'm interpreting you correctly - you mean an IRC channel would turn into the 'home' of the community and the subreddit would drop in activity as a result? While the two offer very different means of discussion (the subreddit supporting concurrent discussions a lot better, of course) I do think in-practise that may indeed occur.

For clarity, I didn't intend to suggest we start up an IRC channel for the community; my intention was to find out where people hung out so I could both extend my participation in the communities around Valve & Steam and get to know those involved in those communities, thus becoming a more involved and better community member myself. I can be found in #tfwiki and #dota2wiki channels on Freenode.net, I idle some others but those are the channels that have a reasonable level of activity on their own and that I tend to be most active in.

buttttttttt steam already has group chat. maybe we just encourage people to start using the chat for the larger reddit steam group?

What about having game events in popular games: TF2, CS:S, DoD:S, L4D2, etc?

Beyond profiles as flair, I could said allow you to add a pick to the post title. Have about 5 icons according to the type of post being made, Bugs/Client Problems, Scammers, Sales, Players.
